The best method is to have 1P do all the events while 2P addresses other issues (like keeping allies or the main camp alive). Note that on 2 player co-op, both players can quickly over-stack events and cause a foul-up on the sequencing. If you want to use a character from another story, simply clear the story modes and you can use any unlocked officer in the cleared story (making free mode useless!).
